Is a career in Home Inspections for you?
Anyone can become a home inspector; however, those that succeed
are highly qualified and properly trained. Most people come
to this profession with a solid background in construction of
either building construction, HVAC, plumbing or electrical,
engineering or architecture. Even with extensive knowledge and
experience it takes training in home inspections. The items
examined in a home inspection, the limitations, common defects
observed, and the writing of the report in a clear and concise
method are the areas of training concentration. Do you have
good communication skills? An important part of an inspection
is the oral and written report.
Another consideration is state licensing of home inspectors.
Check the state by state list for
the home inspector license law and rules and regulation in your
area. Those states with licensing have education requirements,
inspection experience standards as well as a state exam.
Other Considerations
Do you have an inquisitive mind?
Sometimes it is like putting together a puzzle to determine the
defect and the cause of the problem in a house.
Do you enjoy solving problems?
Home inspectors look for clues and telltale signs and red flags
of defects.
Do you like people? You will meet
all kinds of personalities.
Do you want to be your own boss
and do you have the management skills to run a business. You
will manage the inspection business, bookkeeping, sales, purchasing,
and marketing of the business.
Are you physically fit?
Performing inspections requires physical fitness and stamina
because at each inspection you are going up and down stairs,
crawling in the crawlspace, going into the attic, climbing a
ladder, bending over to check plumbing, driving, etc.
Do you handle pressure?
Dealing with the public can be stress especially when in the
mist of purchasing a home.
