Unit 1 Roofing

Lesson 1: Roof, Part 1
Limitations of inspecting a roof, styles of roof, and inspection techniques of pitched and flat roofs.
Lesson 2: Roof, Part 2
Characteristics of roofing material, application, life expectancies, identifying problems, gutters and downspouts, vents and roof mounted equipment.
Lesson 3: Roof, Part 3
Roofing defects on materials of pitched and flat roofs, ventilation, defects observed on gutters, downspouts, and flashings.

Unit 2 Exterior

Lesson 4: Exterior, Part 1
Limitations of inspecting the exterior, siding and trim, applications, life expectancies.
Lesson 5: Exterior, Part 2
Primary windows, and their characteristics, exterior doors and operation, porches, decks, step and rails.
Lesson 6: Exterior, Part 3
Defects observed on the exterior siding and trim, primary windows, exterior doors, porches, decks, steps and rails.

Unit 3 Foundation/Basement/Structure

Lesson 7: Foundation/Basement/Structure, Part 1
Limitations of a foundation/basement/structure, foundation material and structure materials and their applications.
Lesson 8: Foundation/Basement Structure, Part 2
Ventilation, interior and exterior drainage, and maintaining a dry crawl space or basement, defects observed associated with the foundation, structure, and a basement.

Unit 4 Plumbing

Lesson 9: Plumbing, Part 1
Limitations of a plumbing inspection, main supply line, interior plumbing lines, water pressure & drainage flow.
Lesson 10: Plumbing , Part 2
Fixtures, faucets and their characteristics and defects, hot water source and common defects of main supply lines, interior plumbing lines.

Unit 5 Electrical

Lesson 11: Electrical, Part 1
Limitations of an electrical system, exterior electrical service, main panel and subpanels, interior wiring.
Lesson 12: Electrical, Part 2
Interior and exterior components of the electrical system, defects observed on the meters, main panel, subpanels, wiring, interior and exterior systems.

Unit 6 Heating/Fireplace

Lesson 13: Heating/Fireplace, Part 1
Limitations of heating system and fireplace, fuel types, locations and condition of thermostat, warm air systems, ductwork and filters.
Lesson 14: Heating/Fireplace, Part 2
Defects, hydronic systems, space heating, fireplaces, characteristics, warm air system, and their defects, observed in fireplaces.

Unit 7 Air Conditioning

Lesson 15: Air Conditioning
Limitations of air condition, thermostats and characteristics, register filters and ductwork, defects of the AC system.

Unit 8 Insulation

Lesson 16: Insulation
Limitations of the insulation, defects observed, types, characteristics, R-Value.

Unit 9 Interior

Lesson 17: Interior
Appliances, defects observed, limitations, interior windows and doors, interior, walls, ceiling and floors.

Lesson Outline

There are 9 units in this course with a total of 17 lessons. Each unit and lesson will progress through the following outline.

Instructors discuss how the previous lesson relates to the lesson the student is about to study. It is an overview of the lesson and offers practical tips from the instructor's experience.
